Alysa, this was transformative for me. I read it, did a lot of thinking, and redirected my hostessing energy into spending meaningful moments with the family I was lucky enough to have in my home. I love creating pretty place settings, cooking dinner “all by myself,” taking up the banner in the presentation of family traditions, making sure my home is clean and warm and comfortable. I know tons of people love doing this too, but your words made me rethink what truly makes people feel comfortable and happy in my home: talking, listening, talking some more, asking for advice and help (even when you don’t need it…). I found out many stories and interests of my relatives that I didn’t know, learned new skills (because I asked for help with things I was planning to do “all by myself”), and everyone relaxed. So for me, because of you, thanksgiving was less performance, more thankfulness, and certainly much more meaningful.

You’re making a difference, Alysa. 11 people who don’t know you had a happier, more truthful THANKSgiving because of the work you’re doing. Thank you for creating this.
